Goodna is a riverside suburb on the eastern edge of Ipswich, Queensland — a place where 19th-century heritage, jacaranda-lined streets and one of South East Queensland’s most multicultural communities all share the same postcode (4300).
Sitting on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, 22 kilometres south-west of Brisbane CBD and 13 kilometres from central Ipswich, Goodna has long been a strategic meeting point — first for the Yagara people whose country this is, then for colonial bullock teams hauling timber to the wharf, and today for tens of thousands of commuters who pass through Goodna train station each week.
The suburb covers 7.9 square kilometres and is home to around 10,500 residents. It’s bounded to the north by the Brisbane River, with Woogaroo Creek forming the eastern boundary. Neighbouring suburbs include Bellbird Park, Gailes, Camira, Collingwood Park, Redbank and Redbank Plains.
Goodna at a glance
A community of many cultures
More than anything else, Goodna is defined by its people. According to the most recent census, around 9% of residents were born in New Zealand, and significant communities trace their heritage to Samoa, Vietnam, England, the Philippines and across the Pacific. At home, residents speak Samoan, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Swahili, Spanish — and English with all of those rich influences.
This diversity isn’t a footnote — it’s the texture of daily life here. You’ll hear it in the music at the Jacaranda Festival, taste it at the food stalls, and see it in the friendships between neighbours who grew up on different sides of the world.
Neighbours say hello to each other on the street. It’s a warm and friendly area — a wonderful multicultural place.
A strategic location
The Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Regional Plan designates Goodna as a Major Activity Centre, a Transport-Oriented Development Centre, and an Economic Activity Centre. In plain English: this is a suburb earmarked for sustained, quality growth — anchored by the Goodna Marketplace shopping precinct (with approval for buildings up to 12 storeys), the train station, and direct access to the Ipswich, Centenary and Logan Motorways.
That makes Goodna unusually well-connected for an outer suburb: 38 minutes by train to Brisbane Central, 21 minutes to Ipswich, around 70 minutes’ drive to the Gold Coast, and just over an hour to Toowoomba.
